Methods Used for Divination of I Ching

The ancient Chinese used various methods for divination when consulting the I Ching. During the Shang dynasty (1766 – 1122BC) tortoise shell was used for divination. They heated the shell until it cracks and thereon made an interpretation. In the Zhou dynasty (1122 -221BC) yarrow stalks were commonly used for divination and different length of the stalks were used by different social classes.

During the Tang dynasty (618 – 917) the 3-coin method was used by the diviners for divination. It became very popular after it was promoted by an eminent I Ching scholar Shao Yun (1011 – 1077), during the Southern Dynasty. Since then it was commonly used especially in the West, as it is practical and very accurate. You only need to toss 3 coins for six successive times; each toss represents a line and the 6 lines make up a Hexagram.
