Development of the Present I Ching

The present I Ching we use today for divination and consultation is the Zhou of I - the I of the Zhou dynasty. During that time the royal court used the three systems for divination; namely, Lian Shan I, Gui Cang I and the Zhou of I. However, only the Zhou of I remained whilst the other two were not passed down. The present Zhou of I was actually the evolution of the ancient two systems which was gradually developed into the present I Ching.

The I Ching we use today composed mainly of 64 hexagrams and each Hexagram or Kua contains; name, structure symbols, King Wen’s Decision on the Kua, and Duke of Zhou’s Yao Texts. It also contains the Commentary comprising of 10 chapters, popularly known as the 10 Wings by the most famous Chinese sage, Confucius.

The contributions of Fu Xi and King Zhou together with the other 2 sages, Duke of Zhou and Confucius formed the I Ching.
